Summer 2018

During the summer, many TNCS faculty and staff were able to participate in professional development opportunities that allowed them to learn more, collaborate with peers, and share what we are doing at TNCS. Here we take a look at 3 remarkable experiences.

MIT: Learning and the Brain Conference

Terri Birkelien, Isabel Futterman, and Susie Hudgins attended the “Learning and the Brain Conference” at MIT. They each participated in collaborative presentations on the neuroscience of reading in areas like “Neuroscience for Educators”, “ELL Students with Reading Difficulties,” and “Helping Individuals with Dyslexia Develop Foundational Literacy Skills Using Non-Left Brain Strategies and the Power of Emotion and Memory.” Below, Mrs. Birkelien, Ms. Hudgins, and Mrs. Futterman are pictured with Dr. John Gabrieli and Dr. Johanna Christdoulou.

Singing Bowls & Yoga

Jim Morgan has joined the Health & Wellness department this year and his summer was spent honing his skills for this new role. He started in Chicago at the Vibrational Sound Association’s Singing Bowl Certification Course where he learned and was certified in vibrational sound therapy with singing bowls. Next, Jim ventured to Costa Rica for 3 weeks at the Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort where he graduated from the Alchemy of Yoga Registered Yoga Teacher Training Program. Mr. Morgan also became a Certified Instructor of CPR and First Aid with the American Red Cross.

South Africa

Head of School, Nancy Foy, ventured to Cathedral Peak, South Africa this summer for The Dyslexia Foundation’s Extraordinary Brain Symposium. The topic was Dyslexia 101: Revisiting Etiology, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Policy. Every other year, The Dyslexia Foundation brings together leaders in the field of dyslexia to share research and conversation.  TNCS was one of twelve schools represented from the US.  Researchers traveled from the US, England, Canada, Telavi, and Australia.
