Student Spotlight: Sami Browne

Sami Browne, TNCS 9th grader, has been a part of Girl Scouts since 1st grade. The mission of the Girl Scouts is to “build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place”. Over the summer Sami achieved her Silver Award. The Girl Scouts explain the award on their website:

Sami’s project benefitted The Sophie House, a local charity that provides encouragement, supportive services, and housing for single women and single women with children, that will move them from instability to stability. They have many events throughout the year and host many children so she and a fellow Girl Scout came up with the idea to provide games that can be used over and over again for the kids at these events.

They raised money and bought 2 large bins to hold the equipment. They also made games for the kids and through Facebook and Instagram reached out to the community and asked for donations of sports equipment that families were no longer using. They were able to get footballs, baseballs, gloves, bats, soccer balls, and many more items. What they couldn’t use they sold to a local sports store and they used the money earned there to buy new equipment. Sami also put together and helped make a Large Wooden Ring Toss for them (and one for TNCS, too!).

Sami has already begun work on her Gold Award as a Girl Scout Senior, which is to interview and film students with dyslexia to give insight and hope to younger students and kids in elementary schools so they know they are not alone.

We are so proud of Sami and all her ongoing efforts through the wonderful Girl Scout program!
