Green Garden Project

One popular elective course, now in its second year, is The Green Garden Project (TGGP). The Green Garden Project incorporates working with your hands and activating your mind through researching, planning, and implementing ways to beautify our campus inside and out. TGGP plants and maintains seasonal produce, herbs, plants, and flowers throughout the semester through a seedling starting project that will then be transferred to a raised garden bed and large planters on campus. They plan to also incorporate art and ceramics by designing and creating hanging planters and flower vases to support their indoor/outdoor garden projects. Some of TGGP’s time is also spent supporting a community recycling initiative of paper and cans. Most importantly, this elective’s mission will be focused on community, outreach and education, and designing lovely green spaces for our campus to enjoy.

Recently, The Green Garden Project traveled to Shalom Farms-Westwood to volunteer their hands and minds! They learned and developed an understanding for planning, planting, and farming, as well as learned about Shalom Farms’ community-based organizations and outreach programs. While there, students harvested 340 pounds of sweet potatoes! “Very impressive for an afternoon’s work. We couldn’t accomplish our mission without the help of groups like yours, and we are so grateful for your help”, said Shalom Farms’ Westwood Site Farm Manager, Katherine Wilson.
