Moving Up Ceremony and Graduation Reception volunteers needed!
The PA is looking for a few 9th and 10th grade parents to volunteer to help serve cookies at the two receptions following these ceremonies. The help for this is very minimal – it’s helping set-up, monitor, and clean-up from the reception. The school will provide the waters, tablecloths, and cookies—we just need some friendly parent faces to serve. See dates and times below – contact Virginia McAndrew if you’re interested in helping.
- 8th grade Moving Up: May 31, 10:30-11:30am
- Set-up at 10am, you’d stay through the ceremony, and then reception is immediately following (lasting no more than an hour)
- Graduation: June 4, 5pm
- Set-up at 4:15, you’d stay through graduation, and then reception is immediately following (lasting no more than an hour)
Academic Planning Worksheet
Parents of rising 9th – 12th grade students who are returning to TNCS next year: If you have not signed and returned your student’s Academic Planning Worksheet, please return it to Mr. Rothschild this week. If you have specific questions or other course requests, please contact Mr. Rothschild.
Ambassador Program
You were once a new parent at The New Community School. You may remember the mixture of excitement and uncertainty of your child starting a new school. You, no doubt, had lots and lots of questions. We would like you to consider being a part of our Parent Ambassador Program. Each Ambassador will be matched up with a new TNCS family in the same division, serving as a resource as they navigate the waters of a new school. You would be someone to turn to with questions and a parent’s perspective. If you are interested in becoming an ambassador, please email Carolyn Tisdale.
Student Spotlight: Oakleigh Jones
TNCS 8th grader, Oakleigh Jones, dances at Momentum Dance Center with both their Competition Team and Pre-professional Ensemble group. She trains up to 16 hours/week and loves every minute – but make no mistake, she works hard to constantly improve her technique and performance. Oakleigh has also received scholarships to attend summer intensives with Dance Educators of America and The School of Richmond Ballet. This summer she will be attending a Ballet Summer Intensive at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Way to go Oakleigh!
Summer Programs
Sign up for TNCS Summer Programs! Classes are held from June 17 – July 12. Click here to see this year’s brochure. Summer Programs are not just open to TNCS students. If you know someone from another area school who could benefit please share with them!
Tech Tip of the Week: Bee-Aware
Earlier this year we shared the importance of quitting all programs and restarting occasionally to keep your laptop performing at optimal levels. This is your go-to action, the low hanging fruit of ‘How-To’ fix your machine when it starts acting weird and not doing simple tasks. What happens when you do a fresh restart and the problem remains? Next step is to see if your laptop has any OSX and program updates. Updates happen in the App store [Pages, Keynote, Mojave] and some others, like Microsoft Office apps, update under the Help dropdown menu. After running updates to either applications or operating systems, please make sure to check both a second time for additional updates – keep checking until both indicate you are up to date. For example, you check your applications and don’t have any updates in either the app store or with your Office 365 software. Then, you update your MacBook Air to Mojave – this will trigger app updates when it recognizes the new OSX and trigger additional software updates.

UPPER SCHOOL NEWS
Book Swap
The Upper School LF Department is holding a Book Swap for students May 22-24. We hope faculty, students, parents, and friends will send in gently used books, in any genre, (mystery, sci-fi, dystopia/utopia, sports, biography, young adult, classic lit), anything enticing and appropriate for 9th-12th grade readers. There is a box in the Massey foyer for donations, and books can be easily dropped in the box by the stairs during morning car pool. Some annotating or light penciling is fine, but we really want books that are in good/readable/attractive condition. Upper School students will visit the swap during LF classes, May 22-24, and take home a great read or two. Please bring /send in your books by Monday May 20th. E-mail Lauren Clelland with any questions. Thank you!
