Supporting Mr. Kay

Several people have asked how they can continue to support Scott Kay and his family. Friends of Mr. Kay are raffling off a week’s stay at a private beach house in Nags Head, North Carolina. The money raised will provide some additional comfort and support to the Kay family as Scott begins treatment in the coming weeks. The house is located at 42222 West Breeze Way, Nags Head, sleeps 10, and the week can be mutually agreed upon between the winner and the owner. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased by seeing Mrs. Fields in Massey Hall. The winning ticket will be drawn on March 30. Click here for more details on the house.

Summer Programs

SAT and ACT prep courses are available to rising juniors and seniors. SAT/ACT Prep – Math and SAT Verbal Prep and College Essay Workshop will provide students with strategies to take standardized tests and begin to develop a topic for their college essay.

The TNCS Summer Programs brochure is live and registration is open! Classes are held from June 17 – July 12. Click here to see this year’s brochure. Register early and save!

UPPER SCHOOL NEWS

10th Grade Overnight Trip

Parents of Sophomores: Please watch your email for information and permission forms for the 10th grade overnight camping trip, April 2-3 with the James River Association.

Recent College Acceptances

  • Phil, Southern Methodist University, Louisiana State University
  • Morgan, Radford University

College Fair

Sophomores and Juniors are encouraged to attend the Richmond Area Independent Schools (RAIS) College Fair for students and their families each spring. There will be representatives present from over 200 colleges. The college fair is hosted by Collegiate School and will be on Tuesday, April 9 from 7-9pm.

Information for Juniors

  • Junior parents will be emailed a Signup Genius by March 25th to schedule individual meetings with the College & Career Counselor.
  • Juniors will take the SAT at TNCS on May 4th and 5th. Typically, the testing is from 8:15am-1pm on both days. Students will register for the test next week in their Junior Seminar classes. Student accounts will be charged the $47.50 fee imposed by College Board. Juniors will be encouraged to take the SAT again in the fall based on their scores and their colleges’ application requirements.

Information for Sophomores

Parent Meeting: Sophomore parents are invited to join the College & Career Counselor in the Greenwood Commons for an informational meeting pertaining to the college search and application process on Wednesday, March 27th. Parents may choose to attend in the morning from 8:15-9:15 or in the evening from 5-6. The presentation will be emailed to all sophomore parents after the meetings.

PSAT: On Saturday, April 13th, we will administer a voluntary practice-version of the PSAT to TNCS sophomores on our campus. The practice-version of the PSAT helps students prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT that will be taken in October. While neither the practice nor the official PSAT/NMSQT is required, we have found that these testing experiences are useful both for diagnostic purposes and to help students become accustomed to the format of college entrance exams. The PSAT is a great primer for the SAT and offers a first glimpse of college entrance test scores which can be used to identify proficiency in specific skills.

Testing will begin in Founders Hall at 8:30am. Students should plan to be at school no later than 8:15. When given under timed conditions, the PSAT takes three hours. Our students will have additional time if needed, so they may be at school for four or more hours. Plan on picking-up your student by approximately 1pm.

Please email kharley@tncs.org by April 5th to indicate whether your student will or will not be taking the practice PSAT on April 13th, so we can get an accurate headcount of test takers. To cover the cost of test administration, the school will charge a $25 fee. This email will also grant permission for your account to be billed for the fee.
