Festival of the Arts
Last Thursday, eight TNCS students traveled to Fredericksburg Academy for the 2nd Annual Student Festival of the Arts, run by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS). They participated in workshops in creative writing, visual art, drama, and music, all the while interacting with students from independent schools throughout Virginia.
TNCS Senior Jordan was the festival’s first ever student presenter! Jordan led a workshop on found poetry where he shared a surrealist language game and taught participants how to create new poems from existing texts. Every seat in Jordan’s session was filled with excited students. After he displayed samples and gave instructions for starting, students were captivated by the new technique and became totally absorbed in their creations. With Jordan’s guidance, students used sharpies, whiteout, and recycled books to make original found poems. Congratulations to Jordan for presenting a highly engaging workshop. We’re proud of Jordan’s creativity and willingness to share a favorite art form, inspired by his creative writing class here at TNCS, with students from all over the state.
Animal Club Card Sale Results
Congratulations to the Animal Club for raising $205 for the Richmond SPCA! The club sponsored an art contest and Sesley Clayton and Oakley Massey’s winning designs were featured on notecards which sold for donations to this worthy cause. Great job girls! Thank you to everyone who purchased these beautiful cards.

College Counseling
You are almost done with your college application process! By now, many of you have heard back from some of the schools you applied to. Please keep in mind the upcoming deadlines to commit to a school. Most colleges ask that you confirm your decision to attend and send a deposit and any necessary documentation by May 1st. If you do not do this, you may risk losing your spot at a school.
Once you make your decision and commit to a college or university, please be sure to let the other schools that you are turning them down. This opens up a spot for another student who may be on a waiting list for that school, and it lets you end your connection with a college without burning any bridges for the future.
If you are considering committing to a larger college or university, please keep in mind that requests for housing might be available sooner than the May 1st deadline. Committing to a larger school sooner than May 1st might open up more housing opportunities for you.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Latta.
Junior Class SAT
The junior class will take the May SAT on Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th. Juniors registered for the SAT in junior seminar in March.
Summer Innovation Program
The STARTSHIP Summer Innovation Program is a 6 week program that helps students grades 10-12 become better problem solvers and more effective communicators! Students will also build confidence in presenting themselves and their ideas. These skills are invaluable to starting college and launching a career. For more information, visit their website.
