Student Spotlight: Spirit of Generosity
Posted by TNCS on Dec 11, 2015
There are those among us who embody the spirit of generosity not only during the Christmas season but all year long!
At first glance, 14-year-old Alexandra is just like any other ninth grade girl at The New Community School. She enjoys hanging out with her friends, playing softball, and going surfing – especially on Bald Head Island, North Carolina, where she has been visiting with her family for the past five years. However, Alex is anything but ordinary. After losing her beloved aunt to breast cancer in June 2014, Alex wanted to do something to make a difference that would honor her aunt’s memory, and make her proud. For the past two Septembers, Alex has mixed her love of photography and vacations on Bald Head Island, to help give back to a cause close to her heart. She has been selling her framed photographs of Bald Head Island at the Island’s annual “Pink Weekend” to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.
The first year Alex made 8 x 10 and 5 x 7 framed photographs of pictures around Bald Head Island and sold them at a little card table booth in front of Maritime Market. She sold out in one day! Many of her photos are of sunsets, shells, Old Baldy Lighthouse, Mojo’s, golf carts, and the boardwalks. This past September she took three times as many framed pictures and notecards, and stayed for four days! Her proceeds, which were quite significant, were all donated to the Susan G. Komen breast cancer awareness/ research fund.
May we all be inspired by Alex’s gifts and generosity – and may we remember that we don’t have to wait for a special occasion or season to be generous and giving with our talents.
